Description:

Los Alpes
is located on the most southern hill of the Cordillera de Tilarán/Monteverde 30 miles away from the International Airport Juan Santamaría, 40 miles from the Costarican capital of San José and 7 miles northwest of the university town of San Ramón in the province of Alajuela. Because of the good roadways, the driving time from the airport to Los Alpes takes only 1.5 hours. This is 4 hours less than to the Monteverde rainforest preserve from San José.

The place is easily reached by the Interamerican Highway to San Ramón and a secondary paved road to Piedades Sur. A final stretch on a 2.5 mile gravel road brings you to Bureal and Los Alpes.

The nice and spacious Los Alpes Lodge and adjoined buildings are surrounded by 102 hectares or 255 acres of virgin forests, secondary forests, bush land and pastures. This privately German owned area lies within other 103 hectares or 258 acres of mainly virgin forests which belongs to the nonprofit German rainforest protecting organization ARCA founded by the owner of Los Alpes Rainer Krefft. This region is bought by German donations and can not be sold due to tax reasons. The value of Los Alpes itself, therefore, is even more unique.

In the future Los Alpes and the ARCA forests will be linked with a coming National Park of about 3000 hectares or 7.500 acres, a huge untouched area of mostly virgin forests.
Los Alpes is directly connected with the forests of Monteverde and the Arenal National Park and includes mostly the same flora and fauna as the Monteverde preserve. Due to its hills, valleys, lakes and creeks and the wonderful views, the Los Alpes region is richly varied. Many of the deforested regions of Los Alpes are under the process of reforestation.

The tranquility of Los Alpes allows birdwatchers to observe several couples of the resplendent Quetzal nesting in the forest next to the house and calling the single trees by the lake. 5 km of trails guides you to the beauty of the lush untouched jungle of the cloud forest with all its mystery and variety of birds and animals.

The Lodge itself fits perfectly well in the environment. Owner and architect used classical Costa Rican country house design as a roof of iron wood and clay tiles, built like a massive German timber roof and crossed blue painted window frames. The buildings solid construction of armored concrete rests on a thick base also constructed of armored concrete. That gives the building a first class security against earthquakes.

The interior of the house is built in an open manner dominated by a hall with a huge fireplace as the center of the interior architecture.
All in total the completely furnished main house gives beds for 8 people, 2 x 2 on the ground floor and 2 x 2 on the second floor (upper balcony). Besides the bedrooms there is a fully equipped kitchen, including a big refrigerator and a rustic firewood stove and two bathrooms, one with shower and one with a tub. Gas heating allows hot water in bathrooms and kitchen. The Lodge is connected with public electricity and two telephone lines were installed for telephone and computer equipment. An electric pump brings water of best lava filtered drinking quality from a depth of
60 m or 180 feet to a huge tank in the forest and from there to the buildings.
The quantity of water is sufficient during dry and green season. A good sewage system is installed.

Two French windows direct from the hall to the spacious roofed terrace. From here you have a spectacular view towards the Golf of Nicoya and the Pacific Ocean including the cruise vessel port of Puntarenas and overlooking the various forests. From the terrace you also can see the silent lake surrounded by woods and pastures. The quality of the water in the lake allows swimming from a small gangplank.

Next to the main house you find another building, a combination of garage and kitchen. It is also a solid concrete construction with a strong German timber roof thatched with original tiles of clay. This building houses the main kitchen of Los Alpes. It is also completely furnished and fully equipped with refrigerator, washing machine, laundry dryer, gas oven and firewood stove.
Next to the kitchen are a closet for tools and a bathroom with shower and lavatory.
A staircase directs to the second floor to a bedroom with four more beds. This dormitory is mainly used by scientists. All beds in the main building and in the kitchen house are well equipped with mattresses and bedding of quality for each bed.

On the other side of the main building a long barn is located, also an armored concrete construction and also roofed with a strong ironwood roof and also thatched with clay tiles like the two other above mentioned buildings. This barn easily could be converted into a "cabina" (dormitory) with 3 bedrooms and facilities. It also has water and electricity.
