Esparza
is a small town in the province of Puntarenas Canton and is the capital of the canton , which comprises five districts . The city has connection to the Pan-American Highway and is easily accessible by automobile .

history
Esparza was founded in 1574 by the Spanish conquistador Diego de Artieda Chirino y Uclés and is one of the oldest cities in Costa Rica. The town was incorporated by the port caldera on the Gulf of Nicoya in the merchant navy and an important transportation hub between Costa Rica and Panama. In the 15th Century Esparza has been repeatedly plagued by pirate raids , the worst being in 1687 a large fire destroyed all buildings and only the church had left. Even before the raids of trade with Panama had gradually become insignificant , and most residents abandoned Esparza .

In the 19th Century , the city experienced a second golden age , because it was at the coffee -export route and also the railway line zwischenPuntarenas and San Jose crossed the place . 1878, the Costa Rican President Tomás Guardia Gutiérrez changed the name of the city of Sparta. Only in 1973 Esparza got its old name back .
