Description:

This 202 hectare property was acquired in 1980 and since then has not changed hands. The owner was of German descent and his German wife still lives on the farm. Because it is primary forest, the owners have left it untouched since the purchase, the jungle takes up approximately 98% of the land. The idea was to protect flora and fauna of the area, and all the animal species that are distributed by human actions from their habitats to provide protection.

In the 80s the environment of possession was a continuous forest area, but after years of deforestation by wood and cattle industry is the farm El Zota one of the few possessions that zone, the primary forest has no influence human activity or deforestation. It can be found by big giant trees over 100 years.

Without a doubt, it is a sanctuary for birds, mammals, snakes and other that zone to get the owner so langa as possible and to protect have tried.

Since 1997 until today is farm El Zota under an official environmental contract with the government FONAFIFO, entered into between the owner and FONAFIFO. The reason of this contract is to obtain the necessary funds for the maintenance of the farm and certain obligations on the part of the government to protect the forest.

Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge

This vast 92,000-acre reserve is geologically and ecologically similar to the Tortuguero National Park, it is adjacent to the southern border. The northern border is formed by the San Juan River (the border with Nicaragua) and extends from the confluence of the Caribbean Sea upstream to the mouth of the river Sarapiqui.

Unfortunately, the reserve status only since not too long after most of the eastern section has already been made to farmland. A boat trip on the San Juan River shows dramatically the difference in land use between the two countries. The largest part of the right bank in Costa Rica is agbeforstet, while on the side of Nicaragua forms an impenetrable jungle front, which is part of a gigantic Indio Maiz Schutzbegiets.

The parts towards the coast are quite densely forested, although still small fincas and possessions are common. Large areas of this sector are charakteristish for swamps, which can easily flood in the rainy season and therefore not suitable for agriculture are ..

A maze of creeks and lagoons offers a vast freshwater habitat for countless creatures, from tiny crabs that live between the floating water-Hyazithen to the large bull shark coming season moderately from the karibiscen sea in this zone and ranging in Nicaragua -See.Tarpon and Snook also make annual trips to the fresh water system, and the village of Barra del Colorado is a mecca for enthusiastie sports anglers who are looking for a world record catch or just a great day of fishing.

As in Tortuguero is a boat trip the opportunity to observe the existing animals like monkey, howler monkeys, sloths, big green macaws, Falcon, Keel-billed Toucan, and a myriad of mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and of course the tropical plants.

How to get there
Barra del Colorado can be achieved on the 114 km long canal system of the Moin dock north of Limon or downstream of the Sarapiqui River of Puerto Viejo.

Flying
From San Jose the flight takes in a small chartered plane a little more than half an hour, or a normal flight with SANSA or Travel Air.

Fishing
The call for tarpon and snook fishing the best. And even if not bite on a day the fish, the magnificent rainforest scene can not be beaten. There are in the zone countless hotels and lodges that can use all the excellent fishing. For those who want something other than fighting the powerful Silver King again, there is the possibility of smaller specimens as Guapote, Mojarra, Machaca, Drum and Alligator Gar fishing in the river quieter areas with smaller equipment.

Climate
Throughout the year, warm, it can rain at any time, although the driest March and April.

History
This recent addition to the National Park System came about as an attempt to form a biological corridor from southern Mexico to Panama along the Caribbean side of the Isthmuses as part of an ambitious regional project called The Way of the Panthers. The appointment as game reserve reserve is an important first step in protecting the existing game stock the northeastern corner of the country.

Potential development opportunities
Due to the large forest of possession, and at least 4 lagoons that are suitable for boats, farm El Zota is an ideal project for the development of tourism, biologishe studies or conservation, with easy access to the biodiversity and ausgezeichmeten opportunities for adventure-tourists, students naturalists or people who can enjoy direct contact with nature in a tropical rain forest.

The geographical location gives this area the typical climate of tropical rainforest and within a relatively short distance from existing tourist centers such as Tortuguero, Barra del Colorado, Limon, Sarapiqui un San Carlos, which allows an easy way for beach visits in Tortuguero or Limon, or visit the active volcano Arenal, San Carlos.

Since the estate is not within a Conservation Area or National Park, although it is an immediate neighbor of the Barra del Colorado reserve, there is no obstacle or problem for the development of a proposed project.

As an additional benefit is to be noted that in the possession of a significant occurrence of excellent gravel material is available for use as a building material or Befestingung of trails and paths that its owner was in the 90s, but this is no longer used since 2000.
