Atenas belongs to the province of Alajuela, is located west of San José and is one of the preferred residential areas of the country for emigrants because of its strategic location and its mild spring-like climate.

Atenas is a small, rural, idyllic, clean town with a little over 5,000 inhabitants (approx. 18,000 in the region) and approx. 35 km north-west of San José at 600 to 900 m above sea level. The heart of Atenas is the park with many large palm trees around which various restaurants, cafes, banks, bakeries, boutiques, etc. have settled.
