Description:

On the banks of the Río Montaña is our homonymous Finca. In this project developed by CostaTierra, we have already been able to sell four plantations to various German customers, resulting in synergy effects in the care of the plantations and in the harvesting of the wood.

Currently there are two fincas for sale: The larger of them covers 34.4 hectares on the slopes of the Río Montaña and has shallow areas near the river. In 2011, we planted 17.0 hectares of teak trees, followed by 1.2 hectares in 2014. The Río Montaña is ideal for swimming due to its clear water.

You can find a detailed Google Earth map (.kml) here.

The smaller finca covers 10 ha of total area, of which 4 ha were planted with teak in 2011.

The company has increasingly focused on growing and marketing teak plantations in recent years. Reasons for this focus were.

the special properties of this wood
the big demand for teak
the high profitability of teak farms
Teakeigenschaften

Teak trees are relatively easy to grow and maintain in suitable soils and climatic conditions as prevalent in Costa Rica. They are very resistant to pests, drought and forest fires. The maintenance effort is relatively low from the 5th year and not very expensive.

Teak is one of the fastest growing hardwood species. After only 5 years, our farms reach trunk diameters of 10-15 cm and heights of up to 10 meters. At the age of 20, the ideal harvest age, the trees have a diameter of 25-35 cm and are up to 25 meters high.

The beaten teak wood stands out in addition to its beautiful color and grain especially by its high oil content. This greatly reduces the water absorption and thus leads to a high resistance in outdoor applications

Demand for teak

Due to its excellent material properties, plantation teak is used in various fields.

Garden furniture and decks
parquet floor
doors
Furniture in the interior
house building
The most important teakwood markets are India, China, Indonesia, the USA and Europe. But even in Costa Rica itself, the demand for this timber is increasing, especially in the construction sector.

Bypass of a teak plantation

All teak plantations of companies are laid out on past pastureland. Forests are strictly protected in Costa Rica and can not be cut down for plantations. Therefore, our farms consist on average of 50% woodland.

There are several factors involved in selecting suitable properties:

Climatic conditions
soil quality
altitude
topography
Traffic and electricity connection
Additional uses, e.g. Construction of a holiday home
For the planting of the farm at the beginning of the rainy season, we only use seedlings made from certified seeds of Hermanos Cabalceta Aguilar S.A. were drawn. The trees are planted and fertilized at intervals of 3 - 3.5 meters.

During the first three years of a teak plantation, the constant weed control is extremely important. Mainly with machetes creepers and other competitors of the teak tree are cut back until the seedling can assert itself from a height of about 5 meters. A constant task during the first 8 years of developing a teak tree is the decortication that ensures that the growth of the tree concentrates on the trunk. Thinnings are made after around 5, 9 and 13 years to reduce the 800 trees originally planted per hectare to between 250 and 350 trees. This gives the remaining more space to grow and reach larger diameters.

The ideal harvest time for teak trees is around 20 years, since then the wood mass increases only slowly. The logs can either be loaded on the farm in containers for export or sawed locally in square timbers for the domestic or foreign market.

profitability

We calculate the profitability of a teak plantation of 280 teak trees per hectare, which can be beaten at the age of 20 years. These trees, with an average diameter of 30 cm and a useful length of 8 meters, produce around 158 m3 of wood, of which 111 m3 can be sold due to 30% waste. These 111 m3 achieve around $ 60,000 at today's market prices - after deducting all ancillary costs.

Our one-hectare one-year teak price including maintenance for the first 7 years is $ 15,000 on average. The further maintenance work can be covered by the proceeds of the thinnings. This means that an investment of $ 15,000 compared to $ 60,000 in revenue after 19 years - plus the anticipated price increases for teakwood.
